Which configurator orders still need engineering approval?

Define the boundary between approved catalogue configurations and engineering exceptions, including thresholds, missing inputs and recorded decisions.

A configurator can automate choices within approved product rules while routing other requests to engineering. The manufacturer must define that boundary. A product looking valid in 3D does not establish that it is suitable for a particular installation or that every technical question has been resolved.

Classify the decisions you intend to automate

Some choices are ordinary catalogue selections. Others depend on verified site conditions, nonstandard geometry or an engineering assessment. Identify which input data the rule requires and who is authorized to approve it.

Avoid a broad “manual approval” flag without explaining the reason. Sales needs to know whether the issue is a missing measurement, an unsupported accessory or a technical request outside the catalogue.

Request typeExpected application response
Approved catalogue combinationContinue through the agreed commercial process
Missing required inputExplain what must be supplied
Unsupported combinationBlock approval or route a retained request
Site-dependent requirementIdentify the required review and owner
Approved exceptionRetain the decision and applicable revision

Test an exception near the normal range

Choose a dimension just outside a permitted boundary. Check that the application does not silently clamp it to a valid value or issue an ordinary production record. A retained request should preserve the attempted measurement and relevant choices for the engineer.

If engineering approves a different solution, record the resulting specification. An approval note should not leave the original unsupported product in the factory handoff.

Keep exception permission separate from administration

Someone who can edit a catalogue label should not automatically be able to approve a technical exception. Define the required roles and evidence. Ask how the application records who approved the decision and which product revision it covers.

Also decide whether an exception applies once to a project or changes the catalogue for future orders. Those are different decisions with different testing consequences.

Define Configurix around your approval model

A configure-to-order and engineering workflow can be scoped in custom Configurix software. Bring approved configurations and exception examples. Agree which outcomes are automated, which require review and what the receiving team is allowed to act on.

Does a valid configuration mean the product is approved for every site?

No. Catalogue validity and site-specific suitability are separate questions. The manufacturer should identify the applicable technical and installation checks.

Can an engineer override the product rules?

An exception process can be specified for authorized roles. It needs a clear reason, accepted specification and downstream treatment, rather than an unrestricted bypass.
