Do you need CAD files before buying a 3D configurator?
Understand what a 3D configurator supplier needs when CAD is missing: dimensions, product references, photographs, materials and approved examples.
Table of contents
You do not necessarily need a complete CAD library before buying a 3D configurator. You need enough reliable product information to establish the intended appearance, permitted dimensions and rules. Model preparation can be a separate part of the project, and its scope should be assessed using representative products.
Separate missing geometry from missing product knowledge
A missing model can be created from suitable references. An unknown dimensional limit cannot responsibly be invented by the modeller. List what your company knows: dimensions, profiles, component arrangements, finish references and approved combinations. Identify which details require confirmation from engineering or a supplier.
Photographs can explain appearance, but perspective may obscure dimensions and hidden connections. Technical drawings can establish measurements, but may not describe the public material representation. Ask which references are needed for each purpose.
| Available input | What it can help establish |
|---|---|
| Dimensioned drawings | Geometry and measurement references |
| Product photographs | Appearance, proportions and material context |
| Component references | Identity and repeated assemblies |
| Material samples or references | Intended finish representation |
| Approved configurations | Examples for reviewing the completed model |
Assess one model before pricing the whole library
Choose a representative product and an important variation. Ask the supplier to explain model creation, material preparation, dimensional behaviour and review steps. Clarify whether later variants reuse an assembly or require separate work.
Inspect the result at the size customers will use, especially on mobile. A highly detailed engineering assembly may need simplification; a very simple visual model may fail to explain an important option. The correct level depends on the buying decision, not the file's size alone.
Keep the commercial and factory data separate
A 3D model does not automatically contain price definitions, accessory compatibility or all manufacturing components. If you need quotations or a BOM, provide the corresponding business information. Hidden fixings and consumables may matter to production without appearing in the customer preview.
Likewise, do not assume that a public model created from photographs can generate engineering drawings. Specify any technical output independently and identify who approves it.
Scope asset preparation with Configurix
Use the 3D asset pipeline guide to discuss source files, preparation work and acceptance. A Configurix project can be defined around your available information, with missing references and client approvals made explicit.
Can we start with only our best-selling product?
Yes, if the proposed scope supports that product and clearly identifies the work needed for later families. Choose an example that reveals important variations, not merely the easiest object to model.
Will every finish look identical to a physical sample?
Screens, lighting and material representation affect appearance. Agree suitable reference images and review conditions, and retain any physical-sample process your sales team needs.
